THE INSTITUTION

The Teloglion Foundation of Arts was established in 1972 with the donation of the art collection and the entire property of Nestor and Aliki Telloglou to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The building was handed over by Aliki Telloglou to the city of Thessaloniki in December 1999, thirty years after the death of her husband Nestor. “A work of life and love”, as Aliki emphasized, the Teloglion Foundation of Arts has the strange property of influencing those who work for it, radiating the energy, the dynamism, the unexpected surprises of a living, constantly evolving organism.

TARGETS

The main objectives of the Foundation are the systematic acquaintance of the public with art, the collection, recording and study of our cultural heritage, the creation of conditions for cooperation between artists and art scholars, as well as the effective contact of children with works of art through educational programmes. The educational policy defines a primary function. Periodic and permanent exhibitions in cooperation with institutions from Greece and abroad, publications, conferences, cycles of actions covering a wide range of contexts are the main directions of its policy. Within this framework, a museum is formed that is extroverted, open, interactive, combining research, education, art, culture and science, with children, students, workers, elderly people and sensitive social groups as its main beneficiaries.

“The Teloglion Foundation of Arts was born out of our love for people and our belief that Greece, with its current human material, can make an outstanding contribution to the new world that is rising. Holding in our hands this love, our entire property, our great gallery and the dedication of our own lives, we went to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and asked for its support, its wise advice and the guardianship of this dream. The University accepted this offer with willingness and love and together we created the Teloglion Foundation of Arts, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

The Teloglion Foundation of Arts will be open to the vanguard of art and art research. This is the vision that has guided those who have fought for this Foundation for twenty-three difficult years. For this vision they selflessly offered their wisdom, heart and labour. The university teachers, the city’s municipal leaders, the press in all its forms and many wonderful people are the co-founders of this Foundation. Thanks to them it is now becoming a reality and their love is its solid foundation. Some of them, along with Nestor Telloglou, are no longer alive. But their love with immortal strength keeps its foundation strong. I said it again, this Foundation is a work of Love and I am sure that it will prosper because in this country that gives birth to the greatest benefactors of Europe, it will not lack the love that it will always need to exist.”

Aliki Telloglou

THE FOUNDERS

“Art is our friend. I believe this deeply. It strengthens and helps man to live, it redeems him, because man is destined to live a very insecure life.”

Aliki Telloglou

Aliki Telloglou was born and raised in Thessaloniki. She was the eldest child of the family of Naoum and Loukia Orologa, refugees from Constantinople and Monastir. From an early age, Aliki Telloglu had a thirst for reading and art. Her dream was to study interior architecture, but she eventually enrolled in medical school.

Nestor Telloglοu was born in Smyrna. His family, merchants and bankers, were benefactors in their homeland. After the Asia Minor disaster, the family came to Thessaloniki. After studying in Switzerland, Nestor returned to Thessaloniki where he developed a strong business activity. The acquaintance of Nestor and Aliki resulted in marriage in 1953 and almost simultaneously their collecting activity began.

The collection of the Foundation’s works is a rich harvest of a long search, made with passion, instinct and, above all, love for people. The core of the collection is their own creation. It is no coincidence that the human figure dominates numerically in the works.
