Description
Depicts Thomas 7th earl of Northumberland (1528-1572) at prayer time turned 3/4 to the left. He is kneeling on his left leg. He looks in the direction of the viewer and is dressed in the garb of a 16th century nobleman. He wears a sword in his belt. His right leg rests on a cushion, while in front of him is a small table, on which is an open prayer book or other religious book. There is a carpet on the floor and a curtain hangs in the upper right. The person depicted was a Roman Catholic and was executed by Queen Elizabeth for refusing to convert to Protestantism, an attitude considered treasonous at the time in England. The Catholic Church declared him a saint.
