Description
On a flat surface, presumably a table, the artist depicts on a first level an uneven accumulation of books, as a loosely structured composition of five books is observed on the right (to the viewer) with a sixth depicted sideways and having the viewer’s view of the angle formed by the spine with its bottom, which enables him to distinguish its pages. The straightness of this spine and the book that is on top of this anarchic stack create an imaginary pyramidal shape from the top of which two equally imaginary lines pass, guiding the viewer’s gaze in different, however, directions. The first one goes from the imaginary top to the bottom left, ending in the white pages of the book. A closer look at its pages reveals that it is an illustrated book, an art in which Angelos Theodoropoulos indulged, among others. Thus, on the left page we can see the protogram N, which has a floral decoration, a typical example of the art of the illustrated book, while on the right page there is a full-page portrait of a female figure in some interior space, possibly if we take into account the curtain on the right of the composition. and which holds a black Halloween mask. As for the stylistic approach to the female figure, it brings to mind the bust of a statuary female figure that the artist made in woodcut between 1945 and 1948, which draw their influence from the female figures of K. Parthenis. Finally, regarding the imprinting of a work within the work itself, it refers to the element of encapsulation.
