Markos Kampanis (1955)
Biography
Born in 1955, he studied painting in London where he lived until 1980. His work was greatly influenced by his frequent visits to Paris and his lengthy stay in Florence. He is primarily a painter and engraver, but has also worked extensively on ecclesiastical art, especially frescoes (monasteries of the Η.Μ.Monastery of Simon Petra, the Η.Μ Monastery of Iviron, the Η.G.Μ Monastery of Vatopaidi, the Η.Μ Monastery of St Catherine at Sinai and private chapels). At the same time he holds an important role in the effort to promote and study Mount Athos engraving, as well as the painters whose work is related to Athos, especially Spyros Papaloukas. He has illustrated books for many publishing houses (Astir, Indiktos, Hestia, Ekdotiki Athinon, Foinikas Publications, etc.), while he has occasionally worked as a stage designer.
His first exhibition was held at the “ORA” Cultural Center in 1979 followed by more than 20 solo exhibitions. Apart from private art galleries, his work has been presented at the 15th Alexandria Biennale, the Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens, the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank of Greece, the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation, the French Institute of Thessaloniki, the Historical and Folklore Museum of Aegina, the Mount Athos Center, the Panorama Cultural Society, The Society for Epirotic Studies, the Giorgio de Chirico Art Centre, the Cambridge Museum of Classical Archaeology and elsewhere.
