Description
Part of the Port of Alexandria is shown. Ships and boats can be seen, tones of blue, gray and brown dominate. Quick strokes, bright colors, subtle tones. The bustling port of cosmopolitan Alexandria is rendered in an impressionistic style. The light of the setting sun is reflected in the waves of the sea. Warm colors (brown, orange) dominate in the foreground, while cooler tones (blue, green) dominate in the background. Between them they are joined by tones of yellow. The balance of the composition is achieved through the diagonally placed ships (left and right), but also horizontal (horizon line, sky) or vertical zones (reflection of light in the sea). The work approaches both thematically and stylistically the Constantinople (1905) of Flora-Karavia from the collection of the National Gallery-Museum of Alexandrou Soutsos (no. evr. P.1862).
