Alaveras Christos (1965)
Biography
Christos Alaveras was born in Thessaloniki in 1965 and studied painting at the School of Fine Arts of AUTh (1984–1987). In 1987–1988 he received the “Thessaloniki” Prize in the first annual competition of the School of Visual and Applied Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, AUTh, co-organized by the Vellideio Cultural Center. From 1989 to 1991 he worked as a visual arts teacher at the House of Letters and Arts in Veria, while in 1991 he was awarded a scholarship (Nikolaos Chr. Koukouflis Foundation Award) by the Municipality of Thessaloniki for studies abroad. In 1991–1992 he pursued postgraduate studies at the AKI Akademie voor Beeldende Kunst in Enschede, the Netherlands. In 1996 he was appointed as a teacher in Secondary Education. In 1999 he undertook the artistic restoration of part of the dome of Hagia Sophia in Thessaloniki. Between 1999 and 2007 he was seconded from Secondary Education to the School of Fine Arts of AUTh, where he served as an assistant to Professor Makis Theofylaktopoulos. In 2012–2013 he was seconded to the Athens School of Fine Arts in Athens. Since 2013 he has been teaching visual arts in Secondary Education.
Christos Alaveras has held solo and group exhibitions primarily in his hometown of Thessaloniki, as well as in other cities across the country. He has also made a significant presence at international level with exhibitions in New York, Istanbul, Lisbon, Edinburgh and other locations. Moreover, he has illustrated literary books, newspapers (e.g. “Aggelioforos tis Kyriakis”), and cultural and literary magazines (“Entefktirio”, “Eneken”, “Mandragoras”). He has organized and presented workshops and has participated as a speaker at various conferences. He has also staged artistic events and performances in various cities in Greece and Europe. His works—paintings, sculptures, and prints— can be found in public and private collections in Greece and abroad.
