Vissios Xanthippos (1947 – 2021)

Biography

The painter Xanthippos Vyssios was born in Florina in 1947 and passed away in 2021.
He grew up in Melbourne and returned to Greece in 1968 to study Physics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Since 1969, he had been involved in painting, influenced by modern technology, elements of abstraction, and references to Surrealism and Sino-Japanese calligraphy. His earliest works are complex compositions featuring the landscapes of Thessaloniki combined with clusters of tiny ideograms of his own invention, which demonstrate the influence of N.G. Pentzikis.
Later, he presented his ‘photo-drawings’ (photoschedia), a technique he had begun developing years prior, utilizing his knowledge of physics. He then moved into researching the hologram as a means of expression, following studies at the Richmond Holographic Studio in London (1985), and courses at Dark Room Eight (1988) and the Royal College of Art (1990–1992).
In 1988, he founded his own holography lab in Thessaloniki, which he maintained for many years.
He held solo exhibitions in Thessaloniki and participated in group exhibitions in Thessaloniki, Kavala, Florina, Athens, Nicosia, France, and the USA.
