Ghinis Alkis (1933)

Biography

The painter and sculptor Alkis (Alkiviadis) Ginis was born in 1933 in Athens, where he lived, worked, and passed away in 2025.
He studied painting and sculpture (1961–1966) at the Sir John Cass College of Art and the School of Arts and Crafts in London, under teachers J. Bowles and E. Jukes. He also received painting lessons from Giorgos Bouzianis and Eleni Pagkalou.
In his paintings, which are visibly influenced by the metaphysical art of G. de Chirico and the surrealism of S. Dalí and M. Ernst, the imaginary plays a decisive role through the blending of unexpected elements and figures.
He was also active in book illustration and designed the sets and costumes for several theatrical productions.
He taught at the open painting workshop of the Municipality of Athens (1977–1990).
He presented his work in solo exhibitions in Athens (Pierce College 1960, Nees Morfes 1961, Amalia 1963, 1966, 1968, Ora 1977, Bouzianis Hall 1986, 1989, Argo 2003) and abroad (Ansdell Gallery – London 1971, Ven Aen Arhus – Denmark 1975, Window – Düsseldorf 1992), as well as in group exhibitions in numerous galleries in Greece and internationally.
His artworks are held in the National Gallery of Greece, the Municipal Art Galleries of Thessaloniki and Rhodes, the MOMus-Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and elsewhere.
