Triantaphyllidis Theophrastos (1881 – 1955)

Biography

The painter Theophrastos Triantafyllidis was born in Smyrna in 1881 and passed away in Athens in 1955.
He studied painting at the School of Fine Arts under Georgios Iakovidis (1900–1907). He subsequently attended the Munich Academy in the studio of L. von Löfftz (1908–1910) and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under D. Lucas, experiencing the developments of modern art firsthand.
Upon settling in Athens in 1913, he contributed decisively to the founding of the ‘Techni’ (Art) Group.
During the Axis Occupation of Greece, he endured significant hardships and died in extreme poverty.
His work depicts scenes of daily life, still lifes, portraits, and landscapes, distinguished by the melancholic mood they exude. Toward the end of his life, he turned to religious themes, though he never strayed from realism.
