The painter, set designer, and architect Thanos Tsingos was born in Eleusis in 1914 and passed away in Athens in 1965.
He studied Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens (1931–1936). After World War II, during which he served in the Middle East, he left for Brazil upon the personal recommendation of Le Corbusier (1946).
From 1948, he settled in Paris, where he initially involved himself with the theater and later with painting.
In 1961, he returned permanently to Athens, where he died four years later.
He presented his work in both group and solo exhibitions, the first being in Paris in 1950. Retrospective exhibitions were organized at the Athens Technological Institute (1965), the National Gallery of Greece, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (1980), as well as the Cultural Center of the Municipality of Eleusis (2005).
As one of the first artists internationally to express themselves through art informel, he created works of feverish execution—the fruits of a passionate delirium—which, although not purely abstract, are rendered through abstraction.
