Biography

The painter Raoul Dufy was born in Le Havre, France, in 1877 and passed away in Forcalquier, France, in 1953.
He took painting lessons at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre under C. Lhuillier, a student of Ingres (1895), and continued his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1900).
He presented his works at the Paris Salons (Salon des Artistes Français, Salon d’Automne, etc.) and was honored with the first prize at the Venice Biennale (1952).
He was involved in drawing, printmaking, book illustration, and set design.
Dufy was influenced by the landscapes of C. Monet and C. Pissarro and is considered one of the founders of Fauvism. His works created up until 1909 are dominated by vivid colors and bold curved outlines. His acquaintance with the work of Cézanne and Cubism acted as a catalyst in the formation of his visual style, which is characterized by thin layers of diluted color applied to the canvas.
