The painter Dimitris Mytaras was born in Chalcis in 1934 and passed away in Athens in 2017. He studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1953–1957) under S. Papaloukas and G. Moralis, scenography at the École des Arts Décoratifs (1961–1964), and attended courses in interior design at the École d’Arts et Métiers in Paris. The human figure within the urban landscape and its everyday reality constitutes his quintessential theme and the primary vehicle for his critical stance. Influenced by the European avant-garde, he followed realist and expressionist tendencies while ultimately forging a highly recognizable personal idiom. A significant part of his career was his pedagogical work at the Athens School of Fine Arts, where he was appointed assistant at the Painting Studio in 1969 and full professor in 1977. He was also involved in scenography and costume design, creating work primarily for the National Theatre of Greece and the Art Theatre (‘Theatro Technis’) in collaboration with D. Myrat, K. Koun, S. Karantinos, and others.He presented his work in solo exhibitions in Greece, France, and Italy, as well as in numerous group exhibitions where he received distinctions (Exhibition of Young Painters, Zygos 1958, First Prize; Salon d’Automne, Paris 1962; Venice and São Paulo Biennials 1972 and 1981; Europalia, Brussels 1982; Metamorphoses of the Modern, National Gallery 1992; Three Generations of Greek Art, Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel 1998, among others). He was honored with the Commander of the Order of the Phoenix, and in 2008, he was elected a regular member of the Academy of Athens.
