Swiss painter and sculptor Albert Louis Schüpbach, later known as Albert Chubac, was born in Geneva in 1920 to parents of Swiss, Italian, and Russian descent. He passed away in Tourette-Levens in 2008.
He studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs de Genève (1942–1945) and immediately after, on a scholarship, at the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva, while simultaneously working as a set and costume designer for puppetry performances. Thanks to three scholarships, he traveled to Algeria, Spain, Italy, and Greece, a journey that shaped his future work in terms of both color palette and visual references. He met the art critic Tonis Spiteris, who secured an art studio for him in Mykonos, where he spent eight months in 1949. Appreciating the painter’s work, Spiteris organized his first solo painting exhibition at the Zappeion Megaron (December 2–20, 1950) and wrote five art criticism articles about it. Shortly after, Schüpbach visited Egypt, and from 1952 onwards, he divided his time between Geneva and the French Riviera.
He presented his work in solo exhibitions in Switzerland, France, and New York, and participated in numerous group exhibitions in Switzerland, France, Italy, Sweden, Belgium, and the USA.
