The painter Alkis Pierrakos was born in Thessaloniki in 1920 and passed away in Nafpaktos in 2017.
Until 1947, he lived in Yugoslavia, Thessaloniki, and Athens. He studied painting at the Gewerbeschule in Basel (1948–1952), at the Slade School of Fine Art, and at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London, where he met and formed a close bond with Oskar Kokoschka. From 1954, he lived and worked in Paris, while from 1980, he spent long periods of time in Oxylithos, Euboea.
In his works, the influences of Abstract Expressionism and German Expressionism are evident, blended with figurative and lyrical elements. He was a member and coordinator of the group ‘La Ligne et le Signe’ (‘The Line and the Sign’), which sought to combine the constraints of drawing with the freedom of color.
He had a rich exhibition activity, with numerous solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad.
