Artist

Karantinos Sokratis (1906 – 1979)

Biography

Theatre director, painter, theatre critic, drama school professor, and actor.
He was the son of Nikolaos Karantinos, owner of the “Olympia” Theatre and theatrical entrepreneur, and the brother of the architect Patroklos Karantinos. He attended acting classes at the Drama School of the Hellenic Conservatory under Nikolaos Papageorgiou, and later at the Drama School of the Athens Conservatoire under Michalis Kounelakis. This was followed by studies in Germany and Austria.
He worked as a director from the interwar years onward, and especially during the postwar period, in independent theatre and on National Theaters in Greece, Cyprus, and France. He was closely associated with the founding and early years of operation of the National Theatre of Northern Greece, serving as its first Artistic Director (1961–1967).
In painting, he was self-taught. From the mid-1940s onward, he began exhibiting his works (mainly landscapes) in group and solo exhibitions.
For his contribution to theatre and, more broadly, to the intellectual life of the country, he was honored with the Order of the Phoenix (Commander’s Cross) and with the Silver Medal of the Academy of Athens.
