Chatzis Vasileios (1870 – 1915)
Biography
The painter Vasileios Chatzis was born in Kastoria in 1870 and passed away in Athens in 1915.
He studied at the School of Arts under professors N. Lytras and K. Volanakis (1886–1893). Following in the footsteps of his teacher, Konstantinos Volanakis, he specialized in marine painting.
During the Balkan Wars, he boarded warships by government order to depict scenes from the Greek fleet’s action.
He initially adopted the palette and atmosphere of the Munich School, but gradually turned toward small-scale works dominated by impasto brushwork and brighter colors with Impressionist echoes.
His solo exhibition, organized by the Artistic Association at the Zappeion and inaugurated shortly after the artist’s death, included more than two hundred and sixty paintings.
He also presented his work in Alexandria, Egypt (1903, 1906), among other locations.
