Biography
The painter and printmaker Michalis Vafiadis (Michel Vafiadés) was born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1931.
He completed his initial studies in painting in his hometown. Since 1958, he has lived and worked in Paris.
The central theme of his painting is the nude female figure. His subject matter also includes landscapes, still lifes, flower paintings, abstract compositions, and portraits of numerous prominent personalities.
He has presented his work in solo exhibitions (Galerie de Six, Charleville, France 1963; Galerie Nombre d’Or, Nice 1965; Musée Saint-Paul, Vallauris, France 1967; Galerie Laporte, Antibes, France 1969, etc.), as well as in group exhibitions (Peintres et Sculpteurs Grecs de Paris, Musée d’Art Moderne, Paris 1962; Peintres Grecs, Antwerp 1964; 25 Salon d’Alexandrie, Alexandria 1948–1975; Biennale Méditerranéenne d’Alexandrie, Alexandria 1952, 1954; Panhellenic Art Exhibitions 1965, 1967, 1973; Peintres et Sculpteurs, Toulouse 1968; Salon Comparaisons, Paris 1968, etc.).
His works are held in the National Gallery–Alexandros Soutsos Museum, the Benaki Museum, the Cavafy Museum in Alexandria, the National Bank of Greece, the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, and other collections.
