Vikatos Spyridon (1878 – 1960)

Biography

He was born in Argostoli, Cephalonia, in 1878 and died in Athens in 1960.
He studied on a scholarship at the School of Fine Arts (1896–1898) under Spyridon Prosalentis and Nikiforos Lytras for painting, and Georgios Vroutos for sculpture. From 1900, he continued his studies on a scholarship in Munich under Nikolaos Gyzis and later Ludwig von Löfftz.
In 1905, he returned to Greece and presented a series of his works.From 1909 until 1939, he taught drawing (skiagraphia) at the Athens School of Fine Arts.
He presented his work in solo exhibitions—most notably a retrospective at the Stegi Grammaton kai Technon in 1962—as well as in group and Panhellenic exhibitions in Greece and abroad, including the International Exhibitions in Rome (1911) and Paris (1937). He also participated in the Venice Biennale in 1934 and 1936.
In 1907, he was awarded a gold medal at the Bordeaux exhibition; in 1937, he received the National Excellence in Letters and Arts (Aristeion) from the Academy of Athens; and in 1951, he was elected an honorary member of the Munich Academy of Fine Arts.
