Vlassis Aristidis (1947 – 2015)

Biography

The painter and engraver Aristidis Vlassis was born in Heraklion in 1947 and passed away in Athens in 2015.
From 1994 onwards, he lived and worked in Athens.
He apprenticed under the painter A. Alexandridis and continued with independent studies and personal research into the European avant-garde painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His thematic exploration concerned figures, personal experiences, spaces, and narratives etched into his memory, as well as the coexistence of people and their integration into society and the built environment. He drew inspiration from old family photographs, frozen moments of bygone eras, and the Greek iconographic tradition, transposing these elements into compositions with a contemporary visual language and a monumental, theatrical, and archetypal character. His works exhibit expressionist and cubist influences, while during the 1980s, he transitioned toward critical realism.
He designed covers for books, studies, and records, and illustrated poetry collections and books.
He presented his work in solo and group exhibitions in Greece and France.
He was a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece since 1991.
In 1993, he was honored by the Municipality of Heraklion with the Kazantzakis Award. His works can be found in art galleries, educational institutions, bank collections, and private collections in Greece, France, and Belgium.
