Axelos Michail (1877 – 1965)

Biography

He was born in Sitia, Crete, and died in Athens in 1965.
He graduated from Law School in 1902. From 1903 to 1908, he studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts under Georgios Iakovidis, Georgios Roilos, Dimitrios Geraniotis, and Spyridon Vikatos. He continued his studies in Paris (1911–1914) at the Académie Julian, under J.P. Laurens, and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.
Upon returning to Greece, he was commissioned from 1918 to 1938 to design the banknotes and coins issued by the National Bank and the Bank of Greece.
His work was presented in solo and group exhibitions both in Greece and abroad. He also participated in the Venice Biennale in 1934.
