Davou Bia (1932 – 1996)

Biography

The painter and sculptor Bia (Charalambia) Davou was born in 1932 in Athens, where she also passed away in 1996. From 1962, she was the wife of the mathematician and painter Pantelis Xagoraris.
She studied painting at the studio of K. Iliadis (1952-1958), where she also taught for a period as his assistant.
Following a trajectory in abstract expressionism, she turned to three-dimensional plexiglass structures. Subsequently, her artistic means were simplified to the utmost degree (numbers, dots, lines) and organized in a mathematical manner, introducing the use of computers into her work. From 1980 onwards, she transitioned into a new phase of plastic exploration.
She was a member of the “Processes-Systems” (Diadikasies-Systimata) group, founded by Emmanuel Mavrommatis.
She held eleven solo exhibitions in Athens, one in Thessaloniki, and a three-artist exhibition in Thessaloniki (Macedonian Artistic Society “Techni” 1962, alongside I. Dekoulakos and P. Xagoraris). Retrospective exhibitions of her work were organized in 1996 at the House of Cyprus and in 2008 at the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST). She participated in group exhibitions in Greece (e.g., Panhellenics 1957, 1960, 1963, 1965, 1967, 1987, Thessaloniki, Patras, Thebes, Hydra, etc.) and abroad (e.g., Salon de l’Art Libre-Paris 1959, 1960, Biennial of Young Artists-Paris 1961, Salon de la jeune Sculpture-Paris 1973, Alexandria Biennale 1967, Europalia 1982, São Paulo Biennale 1987, Israel, Warsaw, Stuttgart, Budapest, Amsterdam, Nicosia, Stockholm).
In 2002, the visual artist Zafos Xagoraris, son of Bia Davou and Pantelis Xagoraris, donated his parents’ artistic archive to the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST). Her works are also held in the National Gallery of Greece, the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, and elsewhere.
