Rogkotis Vassilis (1915 – 1999)

Biography

The painter Vassilis Rogkotis was born in Kavala in 1915 and passed away in Thessaloniki in 1999.
He settled in Thessaloniki in 1923. He studied at the Workers’ University of Belgrade under the painters Sergej Ivanović and Aleksandar Luković, and the sculptor Ante Gržetić (1956–1958). He also obtained a Law degree from the same university (1943).
Rogkotis draws his themes from a wide range, centering on nature, the human form, and the landscape, which he renders realistically without entirely and categorically rejecting abstract art. During the period 1956–1957, he engaged in printmaking, producing prints that convey a pessimistic mood. During the 1980s and 1990s, he experimented with photorealism and Cubism in the spirit of F. Léger.
He presented his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Athens, Thessaloniki, Kavala, and elsewhere.
He was a founding member of the “Club of Letters and Arts”.
