Spyropoulos Yannis (1912 – 1990)
Biography
He was born in 1912 in Pylos. He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts under the guidance of O. Argyros and S. Vikatos. With a scholarship from the Academy of Athens, he continued his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he trained under C. Guerin.
He participated in international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale, where he was awarded the UNESCO Prize. After his death, the Yiannis and Zoe Spyropoulos Foundation was established with the aim of studying and promoting his work.
Beginning with realist painting, he later moved toward abstraction, influenced by Cubism and Cézanne. A distinctive feature of his art is the intensely gestural surface and his experimentation with collage, overpainting, and burning techniques.
In the final period of his career, he created small, austere yet deeply introspective works that summarize the course and achievements of his artistic journey. He passed away in Athens in 1990.
