Spyropoulos Yannis (1912 – 1990)

Biography

The painter Yannis Spyropoulos was born in Pylos in 1912 and passed away in Athens in 1990.
He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts under O. Argyros, E. Thomopoulos, and Sp. Vikatos. With a scholarship from the Academy of Athens, he continued his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, apprenticing under C. Guerin.
Upon returning to Greece in 1940, he presented his work in solo and group exhibitions, including the Biennials of Alexandria (1955), São Paulo (1957), and Venice, where he was honored with the UNESCO Prize (1960).
Following his death, the Υannis & Zoe Spyropoulos Foundation was established with the purpose of studying and promoting his work.
Starting from realistic painting, he transitioned into abstraction, influenced by Cubism and Cézanne. His art is characterized by an intensely gestural surface and experimentation with collage, overpainting, and burnings. In his final period, he created small, minimalist, yet deeply introspective works that summarize his artistic journey and achievements.
