Argyros Umvertos (1884 – 1963)
Biography
He was born in Kavala in 1884 and died in Athens in 1963. He was the husband of the painter Jenny Lyber-Argyrou (Evgenia Lyberopoulou).He began his artistic studies at the School of Fine Arts (1900–1904) under teachers Nikiforos Lytras and G. Roilos, continuing his education with an Averoff scholarship at the Munich Academy (1907–1911) under professors O. Seitz, L. von Löfftz, and K. von Marr. He went on educational travels to various European countries, as well as to Jerusalem, Constantinople, and Mount Athos, to study the art of hagiography. Upon returning to Greece from Munich, he was elected professor in 1929 and later director of the School of Fine Arts, where he taught until 1953. He served as an official war illustrator during the War of 1940.In 1952, the Academy of Athens awarded him the Excellence in Letters and Arts (Aristeion), and in 1959, he was elected a regular member.His work was presented in group exhibitions, Panhellenic exhibitions, and others. He participated in the Venice Biennale in 1934 and 1936.
