Artist

Asteriadis Aghinor (1898 – 1977)

Biography

He was born in Larissa in 1898 and died in Athens in 1977.
He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts from 1915 to 1921 under teachers G. Roilos, G. Jakovidis, S. Vikatos, P. Mathiopoulos, and Nikiforos Lytras.
As a founding member of the art groups ‘Techni’ (1930) and ‘Stathmi’ (1950), he traveled to Macedonia and Thessaloniki, where he became acquainted with folk and Byzantine art—elements that decisively influenced his work. Alongside painting, he was involved in printmaking, hagiography, and the decoration of churches (Transfiguration of the Savior in Larissa, St. Demetrios in Neo Faliro, and the Chapel of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary in Trachones, Attica), as well as teaching, children’s book illustration, and set design.
He exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad (Rome, Ottawa, Belgrade, Bucharest, Lugano, Tunis, Buenos Aires, etc.). He participated in the Venice Biennale (1934, 1940), the Alexandria Biennale (1959), and the São Paulo Biennale (1959). Retrospective exhibitions were organized at the Athens Technological Institute (1961), the ‘Ora’ Gallery, and the National Gallery (1976). Following his death, exhibitions of his work were held in Larissa (1984), Athens (1987, 2011), Patras (1998), and elsewhere.
