Laskaridou Sofia (1876 – 1965)
Biography
The painter Sofia Laskaridou was born in 1882 in Athens, where she passed away in 1965.
She received a meticulous artistic and broader education, despite the fact that women in her era did not have access to art academies. In fact, her contribution to securing women’s access to the School of Fine Arts is considered pivotal.
She studied at the School of Fine Arts (1903–1907) under professors Konstantinos Volanakis, Georgios Roilos, Nikiforos Lytras, and Georgios Iakovidis, while she also apprenticed under Spyridon Vikatos. With a scholarship from the Bozeios Endowment, she completed her studies in Munich, where she took independent classes and attended the Ladies’ School of the Association of Female Artists. She later settled in Paris, studying at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and Académie Colarossi under professors B. Constant and J. P. Laurens.
She engaged primarily with landscape painting and was influenced by French pleinairism and the painting style of her teacher, G. Roilos.
She presented her works in numerous exhibitions, both solo (mostly at the Parnassos hall) and group, while her two autobiographical books are also of notable interest.
