Zouni Opy (1941 – 2008)

Biography

Opy Zouni (Kalliopi Sarpaki) was born in Cairo in 1941 and passed away in Athens in 2008.
She began her studies (painting, ceramics, photography) in Cairo (1959–1962) and continued them at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1963–1968) under the instruction of Y. Moralis, G. Mavroidis, and V. Vasiliadis.
Her interest focused on the organization and rendering of space through linear perspective, geometric structure, the mathematical logic behind organizing the visual field, and the combination of pure colors. Light-shadow contrast, illusion, movement, materials, and projective color interaction were also themes she addressed. With a natural inclination toward scenography, she transformed the painted surface into a three-dimensional space with dizzying perspective, giving shape to the conceptual, structural, and architectural essence of a new geometric image. The absence of the human form is a characteristic feature of her work, intensifying the feeling of endogenous landscapes and of a vast, dreamlike space, both interior and exterior.
Her works have been presented in solo and group exhibitions, as well as in major art events and conferences in Greece and abroad. She participated in the Alexandria Biennale (1970), the São Paulo Art Biennial (1979), the Kraków Biennial (1986, 1988, 1991, 1993), and several Printmaking Biennials: Ljubljana (1979, 1983, 1985, 1989), Fredrikstad (1980), Ivano-Frankivsk (1989—1st Prize), the Wrocław Drawing Triennale (1992), and others. In early 2007, a retrospective of her work was held at the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens.
