Theodoros (Papadimitriou) (1931 – 2018)

Biography

The sculptor Theodoros (Papadimitriou) was born in Agrinio in 1931 and passed away in Athens in 2018.
He began his studies in sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1952-1957) under M. Tombros, and continued them on a State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) scholarship at the École des Beaux-Arts under sculptors M. Gimond and R. Collamarini, as well as at the Académie du Feu in Paris (1959-1962). In 1973, he went to the USA on a fellowship from the Ford Foundation.
From the very beginning, he was interested in the function of sculpture in public spaces and its social character. After a series of travels, he settled permanently in Athens in 1974, and from 1980 to 1998, he taught at the School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He frequently wrote articles on art issues and also published several books.
He presented his work in solo exhibitions (Aix-en-Provence 1965, Amsterdam 1981, National Gallery–Alexandros Soutzos Museum 1984, “Vilka” in Thessaloniki 1997, etc.), as well as in group exhibitions (São Paulo Biennale 1963, Alexandria Biennale 1963, Paris Biennale 1965—award, Europalia Brussels 1982, etc.) and was honored several times with awards and distinctions (e.g., the Rodin Prize for his participation in the Salon de la Jeune Sculpture in 1965).
His works can be found in private collections and museums, such as the National Gallery–Alexandros Soutzos Museum and the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) in Athens, as well as in public spaces and buildings, including the Athens Stock Exchange, the Syntagma Athens Metro station, and the facade of the Hellenic Olympic Committee.
