The painter Marina Haikali-Skarlatou was born in 1908 in Athens, where she passed away in 1950. She was the first wife of the painter Ioannis Skarlatos.
She studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts under Nikolaos Lytras and Spyridon Vikatos. She completed her studies at the studio of Georgios Jakobides.
She was a member of Angelos Tanagras’s Society for Psychical Research and practiced hypnosis even while painting.
She primarily painted still lifes and floral art, along with a few portraits and landscapes.
Her work was showcased through solo exhibitions in Athens (Ermis Hotel 1930, Parnassos 1932, 1934, Stratigopoulou Hall 1936, 1939, Efesiou Mansion 1937, Eleftheroudakis Bookstore 1938), often alongside her husband’s work. She also participated in group exhibitions and numerous Panhellenic Art Exhibitions. A retrospective exhibition of her work was held at the Zappeion Hall in 1950, immediately after her death, as well as in 1972 at the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece, of which she was a member and a major benefactor.
Her artworks are held by the Bank of Greece, the Ministry of Education, the Municipal Art Gallery of Athens, and in many private collections.
