Kambadakis Kyriakos (1938 – 2003)

Biography

The painter, engraver, and sculptor Kyriakos Kambadakis was born in Drama in 1938 and passed away in Thessaloniki in 2003.
He studied painting and sculpture at the Staatliche Hochschule für bildende Künste in Berlin under Professor P. Dierkes (1962–1967) and remained in the city for 14 years, where he opened his first studio and became a member of the Professional Association of Visual Artists Berlin (BBK). In 1975, he settled in Thessaloniki. He dealt with specific subjects through an anthropocentric approach, which he rendered in various materials, different sizes, and a multifaceted artistic language. He shaped his figures by extracting material from an amorphous mass. Influenced by expressionism, surrealism, and abstraction, he transformed these influences into a personal morphological style rich in symbolism and allegorical correlations. The Victories, The Athletes, The Icaruses, and The Jumps are some of the series through which he advanced his concerns regarding balance, the movement of light, the sculptural possibilities of form, the latent rhythmic movements of volumes, the vibrancy of surfaces, fluid outlines, monumental character, and non finito.
He also engaged in woodcut printmaking and outdoor sculpture.
He presented his work in solo and group exhibitions. He participated in the Internationale Leipziger Bildhauerpleinair in Leipzig (1986 and 1988), the International Sculptors Meeting in Caen, France (1991), and other events.
