Lytras Nikolaos (1883 – 1927)

Biography

The painter Nikolaos Lytras was born in 1883 in Athens, where he passed away in 1927.
He studied at the School of Arts in Athens and at the Munich Academy.
He was the soul of the ‘Techni’ (Art) group, the pioneering group that gathered innovative Greek creators at the beginning of the century.
In 1923, he was elected professor at the School of Fine Arts, contributing remarkably to the modernization of the School. His painting, which focused mainly on landscape painting, proved to be groundbreaking for Greek standards, as Lytras put into practice lessons from his stay in Germany during an extremely fertile period for the European avant-garde. The main characteristic of his work is pure, intense color laid out on broad surfaces, highlighting the painterly process.
He presented his works at the Panhellenic Exhibition of 1948, in two exhibitions of the ‘Techni’ group (1917–1919) in Rome, and at the Venice Biennale of 1936.
