Nikolaidis Giorgos (1924 – 2001)

Biography

The sculptor Giorgos Nikolaidis was born in Maroneia, Rhodope, in 1924 and passed away in Athens in 2001.
He studied at the Faculty of Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) and subsequently studied sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts in the studios of Michael Tombros and of Thanassis Apartis.
Moving away from the realistic style of his teacher, Thanassis Apartis, he transitioned during the 1960s into an abstract language that leaned increasingly toward an elliptical rendering. From 1980 onward, he began creating “environments” and “installations.” Within empty, cold spaces, plaster figures dressed like contemporary people move or stand. Their hierarchically rigid integration into the space and the silent dialogue that connects them evoke a sense of the enigmatic, the uncanny (anoikeio), and the ritualistic.
He taught sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1970–1991) and served as rector of the same institution (1984–1989).
He was a board member of the National Gallery of Greece, as well as a member of the Fine Arts Committee of the Ministry of Culture.
Many of his works adorn public spaces in Athens, Thessaloniki, and abroad.
