The painter and sculptor Giorgos Stathopoulos was born in Prostova (modern-day Kallithea), Aetolia-Acarnania, in 1944.
He studied sculpture and painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1966–1971) under D. Kalamaras, G. Moralis, N. Nikolaou, and G. Papas.
In his sculptures, made primarily from soft materials, abstract tendencies are clearly evident. In his painting (natural or imaginary landscapes, depictions of animals and birds, allegorical compositions, and nude human figures that exude sensuality and languor), he assimilated influences from ancient Greek art and modern movements, mainly Cubism and abstraction, developing an artfully folk personal style with references to Expressionism and Surrealism.
He was also involved in set design, book illustration, record cover and calendar design, as well as creating posters and cards.
He has held solo exhibitions in Athens, Thessaloniki, Heraklion, Chania, Cyprus, and Brussels, and has participated in group exhibitions in Greece, Nicosia, Rome, England, and New York.
