The painter Giannis Mavidis was born in Athens in 1947.
He received his first painting lessons from his father, an amateur painter, and later from the painter Andreas Zambetoglou.
Since 1957, he has lived in Thessaloniki, where he worked as a private employee.
He has been painting since 1973, focusing on seascapes, urban landscapes, and still lifes using oils and, to a lesser extent, tempera. His work gradually shifted from visual reality (influenced by Cézanne and Matisse) toward abstraction, following a pivotal encounter with the work of Neo-Expressionists during a trip to Germany in 1984. Since then, his works have become anthropocentric, utilizing acrylics and incorporating time references as a visual element.
He is a founding member of the Association of Fine Arts Artists of Northern Greece (SKETBE).
Solo exhibitions of his work have been held in Thessaloniki, Athens, and Kilkis, and he has participated in group exhibitions in Thessaloniki, Athens, Rhodes, and Boston. He was a regular participant in exhibitions at Dinos Christianopoulos’s Little Art Gallery ‘Diagonios’ , where he held three solo exhibitions (1980, 1983, and 1987) and participated in 53 group exhibitions between 1978–1983 and 1985–1992.
